My husband and I met almost 9 years ago and married 7 years ago (in March :)). We adopted our son 4.5 years ago from Guatemala and couldn't feel more blessed! Up until December 2010, we were an Army family stationed in Texas. We survived a tour to Korea and two deployments to Iraq, not to mention the months of training and long nights. I have stories and if I can figure out how to relate them to our new life, I'm sure I'll share some! After we discharged, we moved in with my family in Lake Havasu, AZ. Six months after that, my father-in-law was diagnosed with cancer ... another long, involved story that may or may not become tangled into gardening stories! We decided that everyone would be better off if B's parents (and his sister) moved to AZ with us. Six months after that it was time for B to transfer to a different school, so we started looking for a house near Flagstaff, AZ.
After a month, we hit the jackpot! A country home on almost 3 acres with 3300 square ft. A paddock for horses, a hay barn, shed and garage came along with the package. We moved in 3 weeks ago (B's parents/sister moved in back in early November) and are really loving the life we're creating so far. So, I thought I'd share a little bit how we've had to adjust here.
1. No internet. Now, this is really hitting us! See #2.
2. No Sprint. We've had Sprint for about 10 years and while things haven't always been perfect, customer service has been great and we've been happy. When #1 happened, someone suggested using Verizon because the service is good (ish) here. So, Sprint contract cancelled and we ordered Verizon. It's ok. I can't complain about how many bars we have, that isn't anyone's fault directly (but someone could add a tower!). What I can complain about is the customer service. We've been on the phone with them every day for over a week. I've finally figured out how to get to technical support, but it took almost the whole week to figure that out. It's definitely different to have so many limits placed upon us. We've been used to using what data or minutes we need and now we have to be careful. Not so much fun when you homeschool and have a husband taking online classes!!
3. Keep the fire going! I'm used to looking at a fireplace as ambiance, not as our heat source! We do have heat, but it can be expensive (propane), so we try to keep the fire going as late as we can at night and first person up has to get it going. We all have heaters in our bedrooms, but the firewood is free ... you can't beat that!
4. Lots to clean. It's not easy to cook for and clean up after 6 people. We'll leave it at that!!
This is very close to the view from our master bedroom balcony.
Well, soon I'll share more of our plan for a more self-sufficient life here in northern AZ. I can't wait to learn and experience all of these new things!
